| Eggdonation / Semen Banking

Pregnancy through donated eggs

Egg donation involves the voluntary, consensual giving of eggs by a woman called as a donor. These eggs are then fertilized by the sperm of the recipient’s husband and the resultant embryo is transferred to the recipient’s womb.

This procedure has helped many eldeyr women to become pregnant and achieve their ambitions of motherhood. In fact the At Nirmiti, the oldest woman to have conceived through donated eggs was aged 54.

Egg donation based assisted pregnancies are ideally indicated in:

  • Women in the 40+ age group who have undergone IVF & ICSI procedures without any success.
  • Women who are in their peri menopause or menopause stage and whose reproductive system has stopped producing eggs.
  • Egg donation can help women whose ovaries have failed prematurely or women who have undergone chemotherapy or radiotherapy.
  • Women suffering from severe endometriosis or TB.

Screening for donors

Generally, eggs are borrowed from healthy women less than 30 years of age not suffering from any illness or genetic disorders. These donors are specially screened for AIDS and Hepatitis. Their family history is taken, to rule out any genetic problems. Married donors with children are preferred, since they have already established their ability to bear children

Procedure for donating sperms

To facilitate donation of eggs, the cycles of the donor and the recipient are co ordinated with medication.Once this is accomplished, the donor is given medication so as to produce multiple eggs. When the eggs are ripe for extraction, the donor is given an anesthesia injection and the eggs are removed from inside the vagina without any surgical cut on the abdomen. Donor’s can typically return home after 3 or four hours.

Semen Banking

Pregnancy through donated semen
In as many as a third of the cases of couples unable to become parents, the fault lies with the husband. Infertile males are those who are unable to father children despite treatments such as ICSI. In these cases impregnating their wives with semen from a male donor is the only alternative.
Collecting semen at a semen bank

A donor male donates the semen after he is screened and tested as safe from various infections such as HIV, Hepatitis and other Venereal Diseases. At Nirmiti we test the donor for infections every 3 months. The semen thus obtained is used in two ways:

Fresh Semen Insemination:

It is insemination where the donated semen is used within an hour of ejaculation. The semen can be placed in the womb after processing as is usually done with IUI. This procedure is popular in India but its downside is that there is always a chance of the donor carrying a latent infection that is undetectable at the time of checking.

Frozen Semen From Semen Bank:

Semen from HIV negative donors are processed, added to straws or vials. These are then stored in liquid nitrogen containers called semen banks, of -196ºC for six months. In short, it is quarantined. After 6 months the donor is retested for HIV. If the second HIV test is negative, this sample is released from quarantine and insemination takes place only at that time.

The ideal candidate for semen donation based assisted parenthood is:

  • Males with low semen counts (Oligospermia or zero counts) (Azoospermia), where treatment with drugs, surgery and ART treatments like AIH, IUI and ICSI have proven unsuccessful.
  • Males who may have a genetic disorder that could get transmitted to their progeny.
